How the Southwest Summer Drive was Conceived
The 2009 Southwest Summer Drive was built out of a fantasy road trip I envisioned a number of years ago, as air travel became more stressful and the idea emerged that I had lived almost half a life having largely ignored the beauty and spectacle of numerous national parks in my regional backyard.
There was no way I was going to cut loose from EGAD clients for three weeks, as I initially imagined, so I cut it to 16 days (two weeks and three weekends) with a tour of six states, nine national parks and ten different hotels—still, an ambitious schedule.
With my wife and kids happily signed on, we did extensive logistics planning as early as a year in advance, made our packing lists, accrued numerous items to keep the kids happy through 3,000 miles of desert travel and eagerly awaited our day to go out the door at sunrise in summer and head into the Great Southwest.
