Clear by Day, Pitch Black by Night
Mile 1,929, UT State Highway 12
After making the steep climb back up from the Escalante Canyon, we perch ourselves on an overlook and get lectured for the second time on the day by a sign extolling the virtues of the region's limitless visibilities. This sign claims that the view before us is one of the last “wild” lands left in America. Not wild as in Vegas, but as in untouched; on a clear, moonless night, it is said that you won't spot a single source of human-created light on this horizon.
