Point/Counterpoint
Mile 1,629, Canyonlands National Park, UT
There are dueling theories over how Upheaval Dome, located at the northwest end of Canyonlands, was formed—and this overlook gives equal time by having separate signs explain each theory. One sentiment suggests that a mound of sandstone in the middle has been pushed up over the ages by underground salt deposits (yes, I am reading from printed materials). The other believes that a meteor hit this spot, causing the crater that rests today.
