Driving down the winding park road back to the entry gate, we are treated to a beautiful view looking northeast towards the start of the Rocky Mountain chain—the closest we’ll get to the Rockies on this trip—and Hesperus Mountain, rising 13,232 feet tall. A flyer for Mesa Verde warns of some potential dangers on the steep road uphill from the park’s entrance, advising, “Do not approach falling rocks.”
