Before ancient Puebloans erected the stunning cliffside dwellings that are the signature sights of the park, they lived in less spectacular abodes on the mesa tops that included kivas, round spiritual centers such as this one. These were part of the larger “pithouses” that are prevalent at the south end of the park, and now have modern walls and roofs protecting them from the elements that would surely cause quick erosion.
