An Underwhelming Chaser
Mile 1,028, Petrified Forest, AZ
Spending two days at the Grand Canyon before stepping into Petrified Forest National Park, 15 miles east of Holbrook, is like having the Beatles open up for Air Supply. The story behind the Petrified Forest is fascinating, but the scenery of the place—basically, a high desert littered here and there with leftover chunks of trees crystallized over the ages—hardly rates as a spectacular follow-up.
