Southwest Monsoon
Mile 1,287, U.S. Highways 160-491
While stopped in front of roadwork some 15 miles south of Cortez, CO, we had a golden opportunity to catch lightning in a camera as a classic Southwest afternoon thunderstorm—a big one, too—rolled in from the northwest. Alas, my trigger finger wasn’t fast enough. We expected a cooling off as we proceeded through the cloudburst, but we didn’t expect the temperature to drop from 90 degrees to 57 in a mere 15 minutes.
