Mile 941, Meteor Crater, AZ
Some 50,000 years ago, a meteor estimated to be 150 feet wide slammed into the high Arizona plateau at 40,000 miles an hour and instantly created what remains the planet’s largest visible crater, seen here in its widescreen glory. A visitor center at the site provides a wealth of information of meteors past, present—and future, as well as serving as a shrine to NASA astronauts, many of whom trained here before heading to the Moon.
