The Desert Watch
Mile 826, Desert View, AZ
At the east end of the Canyon stands the Desert View Watchtower, perched on the South Rim’s highest elevation at 7,500 feet. The watchtower was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, who served as architect for many of the park’s signature structures during the early 20th Century. From the outside, the structure was built to replicate an ancient Anasazi watchtower; on the inside, it almost feels as if you’re within a beautiful open vase.
