Looking Back—and Down
Mile 2,810, Tioga Pass, CA
Highway 120 climbs upward towards the top of the Sierras, picking up a bit more traffic towards Yosemite after passing U.S. Highway 395. Some roads through the Sierra passes are kept open during the cold, snowy winter, but with Tioga Pass’ steep grades and rock-strewn shoulders, the snowplow doesn’t even bother; this road east of Yosemite has been known to stay closed into July after winters with heavy snowfall.
