Just Slightly St. George-ous
Mile 2,243, St. George, UT
Until we captured this scene before sunset, we were underwhelmed by the appearance of St. George, a town supposedly renowned for its red rock vistas, its setting for High School Musical 2—and a place growing so fast, the city’s own web site offered a projection that by 2050, half a million people will be living here. (If that’s bragging, we’d like to know why.) Earlier in the day, St. George gave us scenery that looked no more impressive than Kingman, bargain-priced hotels (our Best Western at the south end of town was quite nice and only $70 a night) and a brief bit of afternoon rain—with the temperature at 102. I have to go back to my extreme youth in Phoenix to recall such triple-digit precipitation.
