Tunnel Vision
Mile 2,179, Zion National Park, UT
In order to reach the heart of Zion from the east, you must pass through a mile-long tunnel that, when completed in 1930, was the longest road tunnel in America. The only light in the tunnel, beyond the headlights of cars passing through, is a series of scenic windows that look out onto the west canyon (shown from the outside, inset). If you’re riding a camper or bus, beware; you’ll need $15 and a special escort for the privilege to pass through.
